Background of the Study
Conflict-induced displacement remains a significant human rights challenge in many parts of Nigeria, especially in regions affected by insurgency and inter-communal violence. The northeast region of Nigeria, including Yobe State, has been severely impacted by the Boko Haram insurgency, leading to widespread displacement of communities. This displacement has not only resulted in the loss of livelihoods, homes, and security but has also disrupted access to essential services, particularly education.
In Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, the impact of conflict-induced displacement on the right to education is profound. Displaced children, often living in overcrowded internally displaced persons (IDP) camps or with host families, face significant barriers to accessing quality education. Many schools have been damaged, and the displacement of families has further strained already limited educational resources. This study aims to assess how conflict-induced displacement has affected access to education in Damaturu, Yobe State, and to identify the specific challenges faced by displaced children in their right to education.
Statement of the Problem
The conflict in northeastern Nigeria has displaced thousands of people, including children, whose access to education has been severely affected. In Damaturu, Yobe State, the disruption caused by the insurgency has led to the closure or destruction of many schools, making it difficult for displaced children to continue their education. Even in IDP camps, education facilities are often inadequate, and the lack of teachers, learning materials, and basic infrastructure compounds the challenges. This study seeks to understand the extent to which conflict-induced displacement has violated the right to education for children in Damaturu and to examine the barriers that prevent displaced children from accessing education.

It will also assess the role of government and humanitarian organizations in addressing these challenges. Limitations include difficulties in accessing displaced populations and potential bias in self-reported data.
